If you want to get a taste of the safari experience before you go or simply soak up the atmosphere of a game drive without leaving your living room, these five excellent YouTube safari videos will transport you to Africa!
1. The Battle at Kruger Park
Millions of people around the world have seen this legendary video that a group of lucky American tourists caught on camera in South Africa’s Kruger Park. Not for the faint-hearted, it shows a graphic struggle for survival between a herd of buffalo, a pride of hunting lions, and some cheeky crocodiles in the lake.

Most viewers will be rooting for the baby buffalo, but it’s also a powerful vision of the relationships between different animals and within a herd. Could you imagine the feeling of actually being there whilst this tale played out in front of your 4×4? It’s dramatic enough on the computer screen!
2. Cheetah Hunt
The spectacular Masai Mara game reserve in Kenya is the setting for this video, with a cheetah as the star of the show. Although many tourists will be lucky enough to see lions and elephants on a game drive, cheetahs are quite rare sightings – and to see a cheetah in action on a hunt is even more exciting.
3. Hippo vs. Crocodile
Shot at a waterhole – often the centre for some great action on safari – the video gives us an insight into the interactions between hippos and crocodiles. You might think the crocodile and its rows of teeth would be the winner is this confrontation, but the hippos actually come out on top.
Add in baboons, warthogs, and Beethoven’s 5th Symphony as a soundtrack and you’ve got an entertaining slice of waterhole life on camera.
4. Three Lions
Be prepared for action and drama with this video of three male lions desperately attacking a large herd of Cape buffalo in South Africa. In a protracted battle of strength, the lions take down a calf but then must keep their prize from the determined herd. The control switches again and again, with the lions having to battle fiercely for their meal and the survival of the group.
5. Kenyan Safari
Shot on a game drive in Masai Mara National Park in Kenya, this safari video might not have the high drama or battle scenes but it’s a well-shot tour of the wildlife and setting of a great safari. If you’re getting the urge to book a safari holiday, the close-ups of these magnificent animals are sure to inspire.
